Mollie Sugden, Star of “Are You Being Served?,” Dies at 86

1 07 2009

Mollie Sugden, the British comedy actress best known for her role as saleswoman Mrs. Slocombe on BBC’s hit series “Are You Being Served?,” died today at 86.

Though American audiences may be less familiar with the  star who became a pop culture icon for sporting candy-colored wigs and talking about her “pussy” [cat] throughout the run of the show, Sugden’s fan base has continued to grow in the US thanks largely to continued reruns of the show on PBS (check your local listings for days and times).  She was even mentioned throughout the original run of Little Britain, another BBC comedy that made the leap across the pond and instantly found a connection with American audiences.

With Sugden’s passing, there are just three surviving members from the original cast.  Looks like a reunion is out of the question.  Sugden, her wigs, her pussy [cat] and her sharp-witted tongue will be greatly missed.
