27 02 2009

In a previous post I talked about the lawsuit against The Pirate Bay, a popular file sharing site.

While reading some of my favorite blogs, I came across an update that includes a transcript of Fredrik Neij’s (one of the founders) testimoney.  To read more click here.

Brooklyn Bacon Bonanza

27 02 2009

Anyone who knows me understands my obsession with bacon.  Yes, the greasy, classic American breakfast side dish (though I don’t limit it to my morning meal).

You can imagine my excitement when a friend told me about BACON TAKEDOWN, an event featuring 30 different bacon creations.  For just $10, you can gorge yourself all night as you take turns riding the Bacon Warpig.  I’m not sure what that is, but the name and picture shown here is enough to peak my interest.

Once you’ve had your fill you vote on your favorite recipes, and I assume the winner is named top pig.  For more info, click here

iCheat with iPhone

18 02 2009

blackjack_card_counter_apple_ipod_itouchSure your iPhone can help you with turn-by-turn directions, calculating tips, leveling pictures, and a plethora of other tasks, but did you know it can help you cheat at Blackjack?

A new app called Blackjack Card Counter does exactly what the name implies; count cards.  Now gambling regulators in Nevada are warning casinos to keep an eye out for gamblers who bring their iPod Touch or iPhone to the table.

Though card counting isn’t illegal in the state of Nevada, using devices to help count cards is considered a felony punishable by time in prison.

Shiver Me Downloads: Pirate Bay Charges Reduced

18 02 2009

Just one day after the four men behind The Pirate Bay – a popular file sharing site – went on trial in Stockholm, prosecutors have already dropped the most severe charges for assisting copyright infringement.

154854-piratebay_thumb_original1The trial, which started yesterday, accuses Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Carl Lundstrom of helping millions of users worldwide to break copyright laws by allowing them access to music, films and software through torrents, a download protocol that pulls sections of a single file from multiple sources (this is the loop hole used to get around copyright laws).

“It is clear the prosecutor had no clue about the technology behind the charges,” said legal expert Stefan Wahlberg.  “When the defense counsel explained how the torrent technology works, he realized there were no grounds for the charges.”  Now the only charges that remain are for assisting making copyright material available.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out.  Pirated music, films and software combined equal approximately $14.6 billion in lost revenue annually.  Surprisingly enough, when you compare the top 10 most pirated movies of 2008 to the top 10 films at the box office worldwide for the same year, only two films come up on both lists; Horton Hears a Who! and The Dark Night.  Clearly, consumers have some restrictions to what they will and won’t download illegally.  What about you?  Have you downloaded any of these films in the past year?  What are your thoughts on pirating digital materials?

Top 10 Most Pirated Movies

  • The Dark Knight: 7,030,000 downloads
  • The Incredible Hulk: 5,840,000 downloads
  • The Bank Job: 5,410,000 downloads
  • You Don’t Mess with the Zohan: 5,280,000 downloads
  • National Treasure: Book of Secrets: 5,240,000 downloads
  • Juno: 5,190,000 downloads
  • Tropic Thunder: 4,900,000 downloads
  • I Am Legend: 4,870,000 downloads
  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall: 4,400,000 downloads
  • Horton Hears a Who!: 4,360,000 downloads

Eye Rescue Stimulus Package

13 02 2009

Is the economy getting to you?  You may not think so, but the stress is showing in your eyes.  Here are some products to help relax, soothe and smooth tired eyes.

Under Eye Complex ($18.00) fom Baxter of California is one of the best hydrating eye lotions for men.  The fragrance free formula contains a blend of aloe, green tea, grape seed extract and avocado oil to minimize puffiness and dark circles.

Give your eyes a buzz with the Bullie Bullet ($20), an under eye restorative that packs a punch with a triple shot of caffeine: green tea, black tea and Guarana.  My favorite part is the roll-on applicator, so you won’t waste any product by applying with your fingers.

A cold compress is one of the quickest ways to bring down swelling.  Try the Eye Gel Mask ($13) from MenScience Androceuticals.  The gel mask can be placed in the fridge (or warm water), and will retain the temperature while you sit back in your favorite recliner and let your eyes relax.  Try MenScience’s Eye Rescue Formula ($37), which includes kojic acid, vitamin E and green tea to diminish dark circles and wrinkles.

Last, but not least, is the Age Rescue Eye Therapy ($26) by Lab Series.  The fragrance free, hydrating gel-cream formula is ophthalmologist-tested to give the user younger looking eyes.  Optical diffusers reduce the appearance of visible lines and wrinkles, Pyrus Malus Extract improves elasticity and smoothness, and Fish Cartilage Extract diminishes the appearance of dark circles.  On a side note, if you have questions about how a product performs, you can have a live chat with a Lab Tech.
