BestPicks: New On DVD This Week

31 03 2009

It may be three days until the weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t partake in some mid-week entertainment.  If you’re like my friends and me though, you might be on a limited budget.  Why not stay in and make it a movie night?  After all, there are a number of new DVDs out today.  Here are my picks of must-see films worth your Benjamins.

  • slumdog_millionaire_movie_posterSlumdog Millionaire – When I first heard the premise for this film I thought; “REALLY, a film based on the game show ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire‘”?  It didn’t seem like a movie I wanted to waste my time or money on seeing.  The buzz was too big though, and I finally caved, a decision I’m very happy about.  Slumdog definitely deserves the Oscar for Best Picture
  • Marley & Me – I’m not a big fan of films about pets, even though I love animals.  There is always something so contrived about a pet-centric film.  This one has plenty of great laughs though, mixed with some heartfelt moments.  And who doesn’t like watching Jennifer Aniston?
  • Seven Pounds – I haven’t seen this film yet, but I’ve heard great things about it.  Departing from his normal action hero path, Will Smith plays a man on a road to redemption as he helps change the lives of strangers for the better.

If you don’t have time to swing by BestBuy on your way home, logon to Netflix.  Here’s the top 10 movies that people are watching this week on Netflix Instant

  1. Made of Honor
  2. Heroes: Season 3
  3. 88 Minutes
  4. Dead Like Me: Life After Death
  5. Never Back Down
  6. Superbad
  7. Elegy
  8. Penelope
  9. Gardens of the Night
  10. Ratatouille

Is the Big Bunny Broke? Playboy Closing NYC Corporate Headquarters

24 03 2009

If you’ve been reading my blog recently, or watching mainstream media, you’re already aware that print media has been hit hard by the economy.

With advertisers focusing largely on broadcast and online media, magazines and newspapers are striving to stay relevant…and afloat.

Vintage Hugh Hefner

Most recently, legendary publisher of Playboy, Hugh Hefner (and star of Girls Next Door), announced that he would close the New York editorial offices on 5th Avenue come May 1st. Though staffers saw this coming for months – a few of my friends were laid of from the publication in late 2008 – that still doesn’t ease the blow, especially when you consider that there was a time when Playboy boasted the highest ad rates of any men’s magazine.

For the employees in the New York Office – there are around 100 –  some will be merged with the Chicago branch while the rest will be left jobless.  Looks like the unemployment rate, which jumped from 7.6 to 8.1 percent in February, may hit double digits just as projected.

When the the most iconic men’s magazine known for decadence has to economize, what does that mean for the others working to remain open?  Maybe this is just a glimpse at what’s to come.

What are your thoughts?  Is print media dead?

TOPMAN Opening Shop in NYC

20 03 2009

In case it isn’t obvious from the name of my blog, or even the logo; I love Britain.  They’ve given us such treasures as Matt Lucas and David Walliams of Little Britain and Ricky Gervais, creator and star of The Office (the original).  Did I mention they also have amazing tea?

On April 2nd, the States will get another gift from the little island across the Atlantic when TOPMAN opens shop at Broadway & Broome Street in NYC.

Grooming On A Budget: Affordable Face Lotions

17 03 2009

Moisturizer.  To the average Joe on the street, this word can be a little intimidating or even emasculating.  If you want to look your best though, it’s an important step in the grooming process.

RéVive® SENSITIF™ Oil Free Lotion

One of my favorite moisturizers is the SENSITIF™ Oil Free Lotion from RéVive®.  I love it because it doesn’t clog my pores and it always dries to a matte finish.  At $195 for a 2oz bottle, it’s not really a purchase that most guys are willing to make, especially during tough economic times.

Thankfully, there are many more options, most under or around $10.  Click here to Save Your Skin with these five moisturizers, suggested by the grooming team at Men’s Fitness

New PUMA L.I.F.T Racer Sneakers

13 03 2009

PUMA by far makes my favorite running shoes, though oddly enough, I don’t do that much running.

I love the versatility of their shoes.  You can go from the street to the gym to the office with their casual fashion styles, or do a 10K run with the new PUMA L.I.F.T. Racer sneakers, which go on sale this weekend for $75.

Girl Next Door Hits the Beach

12 03 2009

Coming off E!’s highly successful reality show, The Girls Next Door, Bridget Marquardt has landed a new gig has host of the Travel Channel’s new show, “Bridget’s Sexiest Beaches.”

What experience does the bombshell Playboy model bring to the show?  For starters, she’s already hosted or reported for a number of projects with E! and Playboy.  Marquardt adds, “I love adventure and I think that’s the No. 1 qualification for this [show].”

In the premiere episode, airing tonight at 10pm EST, Marquardt will be visiting the Australian coast where she’ll immerse herself in the culture, starting with a visit to the Manly Beach Surf Lifesaving Carnival Competition.  Afterwards, she’ll use all the skills she picked up while at the Playboy Mansion when she tries her hand as a bikini-clad meter maid at Surfer’s Paradise.  I think that’s one ticket that most guys would be happy to accept.

If the beaches don’t peak your interest, I’m sure Bridget’s wardrobe changes will as she swaps out one barely-there bikini for another.
