Tuesday Tune-In (Tech & Ent.): iPhone Calls on Verizon

30 03 2010

“Can you hear me now?”  After years of consumer demand, the Wall Street Journal reported today that Apple may be developing a version of the iPhone for Verizon. This comes on the heels of Apple’s iPad launch this Saturday, which is one of the most highly anticipated launches in the brands history.

Now that AT&T’s exclusive deal is up, Apple is looking to branch out by creating a new version of the iconic iPhone that works on the CDMA technology standard that Verizon implements. To date, the closest the carrier has come to competing is with their Android-based devices, which have held their own against the iPhone.

This announcement couldn’t come at a better time.  With many AT&T customers complaining about lackluster phone service – I had for less than 30 days and was horrified by the dropped calls and voicemails that didn’t come through for 24-48 hours – Verizon could see a big lift in new clients and sales when the iPhone hits shelves (launch TBD).

According to MarketWatch.com, Apple stocks rose 1.7 while Verizon stocks were up 1.6% in premarket trade.  AT&T, who has been blitzing consumers with ads, featuring Luke Wilson, claiming the carrier has superior coverage to Verizon, saw their stocks fall 1.2%.

What do you think? Do you own an iPhone.  Would you switch from AT&T to Verizon once the new iPhone comes out?

National Potato Chip Day

11 03 2010

As part of my day job, I’m always flipping through magazines to stay abreast of what’s hot in the media.  This week, while reading the March issue of Better Homes & Gardens, I was alerted to the fact that this Sunday, March 14, is National Potato Chip Day.  Who knew?  I often participate in awareness campaigns, including walks/fundraisers for breast and prostate cancer, but finally this is an awareness day that requires little from me other than sitting on the couch, popping in a DVD and shoveling in a bag of Doritos (though Doritos aren’t technically potato chips).  What could be easier or more fun?

So, this got me to thinking: What are my favorite potato chips?  One mentioned in Better Homes & Gardens is Golden Flake, a staple of southern snack foods.  Being from Mississippi, I’m all too familiar with this brand.  I can remember visiting my father, who is a parts manager for GM, and always finding a few of the large tin canisters – like the ones filled with popcorn that are so popular during the holidays – around the office. These aren’t for the dieter though.  I recall them being a little greasier than your average crisp, with a heavy sprinkling of salt.  Delicious none the less.

If you prefer a healthier option, let me introduce you to my all-time favorite chips – Popchips.  I first saw these chips about a year ago and immediately started telling everyone about them.  Why the excitement?

For starters, these chips aren’t fried or baked.  Just like the name implies, they are popped.  Using the same technology found in popcorn, the creators replaced the corn inside the kernel with potato, so when the kernel explodes, it creates this perfectly round, delicious chip that is a healthy alternative to regular potato chips.  In fact, each serving has 120 calories, with 35 calories from fat.  Not bad.

The chips look a lot like a mini rice cake, but they are packed with flavor.  You can choose from seven flavors including Original, Barbeque, Sour Cream & Onion, Cheddar, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Parmesan Garlic, and my favorite, Salt & Pepper.  They are a little more than a regular bag of chips, but well worth it.

What do you think?  Are you going to try Popchips?  Add a comment and let us know your favorite chips.

Spring Footwear from Cushe

10 03 2010

My friends and family might call me a city boy now, but before I moved to the Big Apple, I spent my time running barefoot through the back country of Mississippi.  And to this day, whenever I can, I still love walking barefoot.  Not only is it a great way to build the muscles in your feet, it feels so much better than having your feet squeezed inside shoes.   Still, I don’t usually have the luxury of walking around barefoot in the city, so when warm weather rolls around, I opt for shoes that can be easily slid on and off.

With spring quickly approaching, and summer not far behind, it’s time to start stocking up on some comfortable footwear.  One of my new favorite brands is Cushe, creators of high-end sneakers, sandals and slippers.  Their new Coastal Supremacy Collection, available now, is inspired from board sports, surf, skate and coastal living.  The premium materials and unique designs make this the perfect footwear for any “man-venture.”

Here are a few of my favorite styles from the collection.

Style: Manuka Webb, $50

Style: Manuka Fearless, $34

Style: Manuka Eden, $95

Style: Manuka Drift, $85

What do you think?  Will you be adding a pair of Cushe sandals or shoes to your summer wardrobe?  Tell us about your other favorite brands for spring/summer.

Corey Haim Dead at 38

10 03 2010

Corey Haim, best known for his roles in Lucas and Lost Boys, was found dead this morning in what appears to be an accidental overdose. According to The Washington Post, Haim, who made his last public appearance this month at the Third Annual Avant Garde Fashion Show in Hollywood, had at least nine projects in the works as he made strides to recover his film career.

Haim, who is half of the popular 80s duo referred to as “The Coreys” with his longtime pal, Corey Feldman, will be greatly missed.  May his star shine brighter in heaven than it did here on earth.

AWARD WINNING FACIAL HAIR: REMINGTON & THE OSCARS

6 03 2010

From stubble to serious scruff, facial hair has been featured in some of the biggest films of the past year. And while many of the leading men in these films had a team of makeup artists, achieving these same great looks at home is easier than ever thanks to the Remington 8-in-1 Personal Grooming System.  Now you can get Oscar-worthy facial hair styles just in time for the Sunday telecast.

The Five O’Clock Shadow
There’s a fine line be tween stylish stubble and negligent looking facial hair. The gruff look worn famously by Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes is easy to achieve by trimming instead of shaving – the 8-in-1 Grooming System comes with a wide angle trimmer head that easily buzzes the topmost layer of facial hair leaving you looking rugged and ready to rumble.

The Goatee
Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell all don the famous goatee as they play Tony, the many-faced antagonist of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Despite its popularity, the goatee requires regular maintenance – the cheeks and neck should be shaved as close as possible using the foil shaver attachment and the detail trimmer attachment is perfect for tightening up the small nooks that give your goatee a well manicured appearance.  Keeping the look at a manageable length is simple with the 10 position adjustable comb, which allows you to choose your desired length and keep it consistent throughout.

The Mustache
The roguishly likable character of Lt. Aldo Raine in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds was personified by an iconic mustache worn by Brad Pitt. The mustache is a fundamental staple in facial hair styles, and one of the simplest. Maintaining a good ‘stache requires one thing and one thing only: trimming. The 10 position adjustable comb is glorious for maintaining your length of choice.

The Full Beard
Getting Jeff Bridges “Bad Blake” look from Crazy Heart is easy – just let it grow.  Trim the mustache and side areas with a longer length comb and lightly dab your be ard in Tennessee whiskey for that Crazy Heart authenticity.

The Remington 8-in-1 Personal Grooming System (PG-360) is available at Target, Walmart and Remington-store.com
